Sock monkeys are comprised of a pair socks and often shaped into animals. They can be worn on the feet or hang from a string. These toys are extremely popular with children and adults of all different ages. There are even singing sock monkeys!
The state animal that is officially recognized in Illinois is the sock monkey. John Nelson, who accidentally adopted two monkeys from an antique marketplace in 1857 was the first person to make the sock monkey a hit. Later, the name of the sock monkey was changed to fit into an exhibit devoted to the stuffed monkeys. Since then, the museum has opened its doors to the public. The gift shop and museum are open since the winter and will be completed on April 15th. The museum houses over 21,000 sock monkeys. The museum is free to enter and a percentage of profits will go to Chimp Sanctuary Northwest.
